South African furniture designers encouraged to enter Furniture Design Competition

South African designers are invited to participate in the Furniture Design Competition, an initiative put together by the Department of Trade and Industry, South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI), Proudly South African and other partners.

The aim of the competition is to raise awareness and the image of our country’s furniture manufacturing industry and to advance this industry by inspiring creativity.

Winners’ prizes include one year’s internship for winning student, participation at the Inspire Expo for winning manufacture, software and design tools, media exposure and Proudly South African membership for one year. Entries close on 04 September 2017.

BRIEF

Entrants are to submit entries for household furniture under the theme “Storage”. The furniture must respond to people’s changing space needs and respond to the way people live and use their space. The submitted pieces must also reflect furniture trends using different textures, colours and shapes. The furniture piece must be a solution to these ever-changing needs and provide storage for the household.

COMPETITION PRIZES
  • One year membership with Proudly South African.
  • One year internship for the winning student.
  • An opportunity to participate and exhibit at the Inspire Expo for the winning manufacturer.
  • Software prizes.
  • Winner profiling in relevant publications & media exposure.
  • All 9 finalists will be awarded Proudly SA membership.
GUIDELINES TO ENTRY
  • No registration fees required.
  • Products design must be new, original and ready for production.
  • Entrants must submit technical drawing of the product (the design must be 3D printable), description of materials and inputs to be used in production, and description of and the concept behind the design.
  • Competition can be entered in one of the following categories:
    • Student categories – Designed Students registered in South African educational institutes.
    • Development categories for Technical Colleges and Qualified Designers who are neither enrolled in the school system nor established yet.
    • Established Furniture designers/manufacturers – For manufacturing companies/designers.
