Massmart and Proudly South African enter into supplier development programme

As part of its commitment to increase availability and visibility of Proudly South African products on our major retailers’ shelves, Proudly South African has partnered with Massmart in their Supplier Development Programme.

Designed both to provide consumers with quality, locally manufactured products and to assist more small and medium enterprises gain access to market, the programme has been launched with 33 local suppliers of products ranging from chef wear, instant noodles, toilet seats, paints and chemicals, a water-saving toilet valve manufacturer, a sock and underwear supplier and more.

Amongst the suppliers are eight that have been chosen specifically as ‘import substitution’ projects where Massmart identified an imported item to be replaced in its stores with an equivalent locally sourced item.

‘Buy local to create jobs’, is Proudly South African’s mantra and at the launch of the programme Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel spoke about the power that supporting local enterprises has in rebalancing the economy. “We need to build a stronger, more competitive manufacturing base…and this event shows what can be done and prove it’s not just in the heads of policy makers, ” he said.

Suppliers with proven track records whose products can bear the Proudly South African logo denoting quality have been selected. Said Massmart Chairman, Kuseni Dlamini, “It is important that we invest in companies who have travelled a certain distance on their entrepreneurs’ journey, and who are now ready for further growth. This programme can assist with investment in capital expenditure projects, plant machinery and equipment that will take these suppliers to the next level.

Said Proudly SA CEO, Eustace Mashimbye, “These 33 suppliers are the start of a retail revolution which is seeing us make significant inroads into high street stores, including Massmart’s brands of Game, Makro and Builders’ Warehouse. We have to make buying local easier for consumers and this supplier development programme is one which can easily be replicated in other retail sectors. Our partnerships with Edcon and now Massmart are a part of that commitment to provide more easily identifiable and accessible Proudly SA products to everyday consumers at retail points, and we thank Massmart for their role in embracing the buy local message, all in support of the drive to retain and create much needed jobs.
