Marshall Mcluhan, with reference to the life- and societal changing effects of electric light, coined the well-known phrase – “the medium is the message”. Similarly, Proudly South African is brought to life by its members who espouse the Campaign’s true spirit and set an enviable example as good corporate citizens. At the end of yet another year, the Proudly South African Board, executive team and staff would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation towards all members for their support during 2009. Indeed, members are the Campaign, and with the renewed commitment from our constituencies, including government, the Buy Local campaign is set to fulfill its potential in terms of employment creation and economic growth.
Yet another reminder to entrench a culture of supporting, choosing and buying locally-produced products and services, especially during the festive season when most people and companies tend to purchase corporate gifts or gifts for the family; buy suitable clothing for the holidays; visit restaurants, the theatre, or enjoy other local entertainment; travel or relax at home with a music CD or DVD by our many talented local singers, artists or actors. Local remains ‘lekker’ – and taking pride in that which makes us truly unique as a nation bodes well for reflecting the true spirit of our nation – for 2010 and beyond!
The Campaign prides itself in the strides made during the past year to increase assistance to members through various workshops, forums and other initiatives; and to improve communication especially through our enhanced website, regular electronic newsletter, new members’ portal with advanced functionalities, the Proudly South African blog, and soon to be launched mobisite. Please make use of these tools that have been developed for your benefit and be sure to participate in the events and opportunities that we will be communicating to you in the New Year.
We wish all Proudly South African members a safe and enjoyable festive season, and a prosperous and rewarding New Year. The past year has presented its share of challenges, but no-one can argue that challenges assist in building character and resilience. We are confident that the sound business principles which members of the Campaign ascribe to will help to position them favourably for new opportunities in 2010 and beyond.
Take care if you are traveling during the holidays, and remain alert to ensure that you do not succumb to opportunistic criminals who may try to exploit unsuspecting citizens during the festive season.
Remember to use energy and other natural resources such as water wisely – and help to encourage visitors and guests to do the same – in a friendly and supportive manner, because we would like them to visit our country, towns and cities repeatedly; boost our economy and sustain jobs in the hospitality industry in the process. Inculcating respect for the environment and our natural heritage first and foremost requires every South African to set a positive example – in the Proudly South African way – demonstrating pride in our own, yet reflecting the spirit of ubuntu and humility.
In the true spirit of the festive season, we would like to encourage all members, where possible, to increase their outreach efforts to those less fortunate than ourselves. Like we have supported World Aids Day on 1 December and ensure that our businesses are pro-actively positioned to help address this issue in the workplace. Let’s show compassion where it is sorely needed, and continue to set an example in the manner in which we treat and safeguard the interests of vulnerable persons in our country – including the older generation, women and children who are most prone to abuse and violence.
Let’s join the growing chorus of voices in condemning Violence against Women and Children, and increase our efforts to do something tangible to eradicate this scourge and help restore the social fibre of society.
Buy Local for 2010 and beyond!
Proud Seasons Greetings
