SARS CAUTIONS AGAINST REFUND SCAM

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has issued a statement advising taxpayers to be alert to fraudsters that are using a new electronic phishing scam aimed at persuading unsuspecting taxpayers to supply their banking details under the pretence that it will be used for tax refunds.

SARS clearly states that if a refund is due to a taxpayer, it “automatically pays the refund into the taxpayer’s account, provided that the details are correct.  If banking details are not correct the taxpayer must visit a SARS branch office with supporting documents to correct the bank account details”.

Companies or individuals are advised to immediately notify SARS of any suspected fraudulent activity.  The SARS anti-corruption and fraud hotline is 0800 002 870.
