South African exports to China have increased phenomenally over the past few months, according to the latest trade data of the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti). This has resulted in China becoming South Africa’s number one export destination, after being fifth a year ago, followed by the United States of America.
Overall, the value of South African exports has increased from R144,9bn in 1998 to R663,1bn at the end of 2008, according to the dti.
The largest growth for significant export sectors (other than unclassified goods) during the first half of 2009, relative to 2008, was in respect of fruit and nuts (11%), and especially the sector for precious and semi-precious stones, at 24% of the cumulative total according to the dti’s statistics.
South Africa’s biggest import growth was in respect of mineral fuels and oil (20,3%) and pharmaceutical products (6,3%).
