SWITCH OFF FOR EARTH HOUR 2010 ON SATURDAY, 27 MARCH
Businesses, individuals, organisations and civil society at large who care about our environment and are eager to demonstrate support for action on climate change are invited to unite in action by switching off lights for an hour on the evening of Saturday, 27 March from 20:30 pm (half past eight) as part of Earth Hour – a global WWF climate change initiative.
Furthermore, all South Africans are also invited to pledge to reduce their own carbon footprint by visiting the website of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) at www.wwf.org.za to register their pledge.
Join the fight against global warming! Sign up for this year’s “lights out” event – Earth Hour – and unite with millions of caring, like-minded individuals across the globe who are serious about ensuring that appropriate action is taken against global warming, and who, through their support, demonstrate the powerful impact of collective action.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 when 2 million people switched off their lights. By 2009 this event reached a billion people, while Earth Hour 2010 continues to seek involvement across the globe. There are clear signs of “a burgeoning worldwide resolve to address global warming”, with more countries, cities, towns and municipalities having pledged their commitment already this year, compared to the corresponding time last year.
“While Earth Hour begins with a global switch off, we are really asking for world leaders to implement a global climate deal that keeps global warming below 2 degrees”, explains Dr Morné du Plessis, CEO of WWF South Africa. This will help to avoid “dangerous runaway climate change”.
